How To Park Custom Domain In Blogger

When you start a blog on BlogSpot.com, you usually get a domain name like (name.blogspot.com) and this is what we call as a free domain name. Where as custom domain name is something like name.com. A good example is myblog.com which is a custom domain name.

Now, setting up the custom domain feature in BlogSpot is a bit of technical part, but this DIY guide is targeted to non-technical people.

Here I’m sharing the complete step by step guide which you can follow to add a BlogSpot custom domain to your blogger blog.

Note: In this case, I’m assuming you have purchased domain name from "GoDaddy" and you have access to your BlogSpot blog.  (In any other Domain provider you can follow same instructions)

#1: Add the Domain Name to your Blog

  • Sign in to Blogger with your Google Account.
  • In the left menu, click Settings > Basic.
  • In the “Publishing” section, click + Setup a 3rd party URL for your blog.
  • Type the url of the domain, including www (e.g. www.example.com).
  • Click Save.

An error will appear with two CNAMEs. The first CNAME is the same for everyone and the second CNAME is particular to your blog.

#2: Add CNAME and A-Records to your GoDaddy Account

Now, sign in to your GoDaddy.com account. Make sure you are on My Products page (https://mya.godaddy.com).
  1. Click DOMAINS . A list of all domains will appear.
  2. Click Manage DNS of the domain you want to add to your blog.
  3. Make sure the domain is using default nameservers, otherwise you will not able to add CNAME and other records.
  4. You probably will see a CNAME with www as host and @ as points to already exists in the zone. To enter the first CNAME, you have to edit this record —
  • Click Edit .
  • Enter ghs.google.com in the Points to field.
  • Click Save.

5. To enter the second CNAME, you have to add a new record. In the Records table, click ADD.
  • Type: CNAME.
  • Host: hqzzzn56a3ri (as an example).
  • Points to: gv-oc7x5vzzzqxirt.dv.googlehosted.com (as an example).
  • Click Save.

6. Now add four separate A-records one-by-one pointing to four different Google IPs.
216.239.32.21
216.239.34.21
216.239.36.21
216.239.38.21
To add an A-record, click ADD again, then fill in the fields as the image below —
Note: You may need to wait for 5 minutes to 4 hours for this changes to reflect globally.

#3: Save your Custom domain on Blogger

Now back to your Blogger Dashboard and try to Save your custom domain once again. If all CNAME and A-Records are correctly entered in your GoDaddy DNS Manager, this time it should be saved successfully.

Note: You may wait up to 24 hours to see your blog with custom domain on the Internet.

#4: Redirect non www Visitors to www

If visitors visit your site without www (example.com), they might see a wrong page. To fix this problem, you have to redirect example.com to www.example.com on your Blogger dashboard.

  1. Go to Settings > Basic > Blog Address.
  2. In Blog Address, click Edit.
  3. Check “Redirect example.com to www.example.com”.

Here is the official help page from BlogSpot team for setting up Custom domain name.

The whole process may look technical, but once you are inside the dashboard and follow all the steps mentioned above, it will be easier for you to implement.

If you have been blogging on BlogSpot platform for a while or for long time and not using BlogSpot custom domain feature, I highly recommend you to start using it for better branding and to make your blog look more professional.
